Benefits of wood as a fuel Using local wood is a very cost effective means of heating which also offers significant environmental benefits to heat users Wood heating systems are becoming a popular choice in the UK; also called biomass heating For large heat users the pay back periods are short The price of woodfuel is not linked to oil prices and can offer a degree of stability in projecting heating costs Wood heating is carbon neutral and using local wood as a fuel would promote sustainable woodland management and reduce the amount of wood entering the waste stream Using local wood can ensure security of supply
About BioMAP Semi-natural ancient woodland covers almost 20% of the South Downs and yet the woodland economy has virtually collapsed leaving most of these woodlands in a very neglected state. Using wood for heating is not only sustainable in that it is CO2 neutral but it also provides a potential economic incentive to manage woodlands and thus provide sustainable land management for this important habitat. BioMAP is a project which is funded by the South Downs Sustainable Development Fund, West Sussex County Council and Renewable Heat & Power Ltd (RHPL). It is being undertaken by Natural Light Partnership (NLP) in association with its partners, wood4heat and South East Wood Fuels (SEWF). BioMAP offers real help to potential wood heating projects in West Sussex and across the South Downs including the urban settlements on its borders.
